Finn Dunton - Collaboration with a young cyclist hoping to make it as a Pro!

As a sports and remedial massage therapist based in Chatham it has been my pleasure to work with Finn Dunton, a young cyclist, over the last few months; offering regular treatments to help his recovery and continue with his gruelling training regime.

Finn started cycling at the age of 8, thanks to an advert his grandmother saw for a local cycling club.  He loved cycling from the very first session and couldn't wait for training sessions at the club.  Now at the age tender age of 18 he is preparing for his first season as a full time cyclist in the UK & Europe!

Finn had some good results from his racing at the end of 2019, but ironically it was the COVID lockdown of 2020 when his training really intensified, with people noticing his raw talent and potential.  From March to August 2020 Finn was training full time and absolutely loved it!  He was convinced that he wanted cycling to be his “Full Time Job” and set his heart on becoming a full time cyclist.

Going into the the 2021 racing season Finn had some decent results, with this in mind his family devised a cunning plan!  Finn and his parents knew that becoming a full time cyclist was a once in a lifetime opportunity.  His parents, very sensibly, wanted him to have a back-up plan for the future.  The agreement was that if he got good grades from 6th form they would support him with his dream to be come a full time cyclist!  What amazing parents!  Roll on August 2022, Finn got the grades he needed and ever since has been training full time!

Finn’s training is intense, cycling between 15 and 18 hours per week, travelling an average of 500km, but his biggest week was 850km!  Can you imagine the stamina and mental strength needed for that?.  With all this training, Finn also needed to focus on recovery and wellbeing -  which is where I help him……

Inevitably, with the intensity and duration of training, Finn gets niggles, aches and pains.  I have been offering regular treatments to help maintain his musculoskeletal system which keeps everything moving properly and  prevents him from getting injured.  The treatments have included sports massage, myofascial cupping, kinesiology taping and remedial exercise prescription.  Obviously Finns legs and hips are a priority during treatments, however due to his cycling position it is also necessary to work on his back, neck, shoulders and chest.

These regular treatments have really helped with Finn’s training as they have enabled him to maintain the training intensity he needs, in preparation for the 2023 season.  The treatment sessions are an opportunity to allow his body to relax, to reduce fatigue in his legs, to reduce muscle tension and to help with range of motion and ultimately reduce the risk of injury.

In 2023 Finn plans to race in Europe and the UK and hopefully win some races - GO FINN!!
